THE LIST OF lawsuits was longer than she had expected.

She had occasionally overheard Jorge talking to his attorney about one of the actions, but when she’d asked, he’d always blown her off, telling her it was nothing for her to worry about. Seeing the list made her wonder how Jorge had managed to keep it all from her and what would happen if he lost the lawsuits.

“There are so many,” she said as she ran her finger down the list of well over a dozen legal actions against her ex’s company.

“There are. Let’s find out which properties are involved in the lawsuits and cross-reference that against the inspectors who worked on them,” Ricky said as they sat beside each other at the table in his father’s study.

Mariela grabbed a pad and pen from the center of the table while Ricky manned the laptop to get the addresses of the buildings involved in the legal actions. “Could you let me have the names of the people suing also? Maybe we can reach out to them for more information,” she said.

“Got it.” He worked off the list that Sophie and Robbie had produced. One by one he got the information for the addresses and plaintiffs and read them off to her.

It seemed like it took forever to organize the information. They had just finished when Ricky’s mother came in together with Josie, who was wheeling a service cart that held several dishes, glasses and an assortment of sodas.

“We thought you might be hungry since it’s lunch hour,” she said as Josie whipped the tops off the plates to reveal Cuban sandwiches and plantain chips.

“That’s so nice of you,” Mariela said and rose to hug the other two women.

“Anytime. Besides, Ricky can be a bear if he’s hungry,” Samantha said with a laugh. “Will you be around for dinner?” she asked with an arch of a brow.
